Circuit Court Documents, 1823-1861.

Documents for three separate cases heard in the Marion County (Ind.) Circuit Court, 1823-1861. The first case, Job W. Swain vs. Earl Peace and William Townsend, 1823-1825, concerns payment for a carding machine. The second, James B. Ray vs. Robert Martin and others, 1832-1837, is a complicated dispute over the sale and resale of a tract of land in Marion County. The third case, James Gentle vs. Charles V. Brown, Richard M. Stokes, John F. Hill, John H. Vajen and George McQuat, 1859-1861, deals with the construction of a block of buildings on Kentucky Avenue in Indianapolis by Brown and Stokes. All cases include the pleas of the various parties, subpoenas, and portions of various contracts.

Fletcher, Calvin, 1798-1866

Calvin Fletcher (1897-1866) was a state senator, lawyer, businessman, and farmer. He was elected prosecuting attorney for the Marion County Circuit Court in 1821, and served as state senator from 1825-1833. Fletcher was appointed director of the State Bank in 1834 and later organized the Indianapolis Branch Banking Co., also known as the Fletcher and Sharpe Bank.
